‘Glee Girl’: Hijab rapper from Mumbai’s slums

Rapper Sania Mistry, who grew up in the slums of Shivaji Nagar in the southern city of Mumbai, India, is mesmerizing the world with the magic of her voice.

17-year-old Sania, popularly known as ‘Glee Girl’, raps in a western style with a hijab.

From the age of 10, he began to express his feelings in poetry.

According to Sania, she was fond of poetry as a child and did not know anything about rap music at that time.

“When I was in eighth grade, my friends told me about rap music that it’s a different kind of music where we can express ourselves in front of people. I learned rap music from my friends in the streets here.’

Raised in the streets of Gondi, Sania wants to bring the social problems of the area to the world through her unique singing.

‘I write about the issues that are most important to me. The first rap song I wrote was also about a social issue. Wrote about the slums of Gondi, what people here think, how things affect us.’

She says, ‘Since I was young, I felt that here girls don’t have the freedom to do whatever they want, be it education or marriage. I decided then and there that I had to be their voice.’

According to Sania, ‘We belong to a slum and here when someone does something, the first question is why are you doing it? What is the need to do all this? What will it bring?’

Sania considers herself calm and safe in hijab.

She says, ‘I got permission from home that if I want to do rap music, I have to wear a hijab. I didn’t mind because I was getting what I wanted.’

Dozens of Sania’s songs have been released so far. He has also performed in the famous Indian reality show ‘Hanarbaaz’.

‘I didn’t choose rap music to make money or fame, but I wanted to make a difference in society. I want to be a role model for my region and show what we girls can do. It doesn’t matter where we are from, who we are or what our gender is.’

Sania belongs to a very poor family. His father is a rickshaw puller while his mother is a housewife.

When he started rap music, he didn’t even have a phone. She used to record videos with the help of her friends.

But people recognized his talent after some time and started showering him with praises.

Sania wants to make her mark in the world of hip-hop music. They want to be known by their name and work.
