The previous Ombudsman Walter Rosenkranz is to become President of the National Council. This will be proposed by the FPÖ, which emerged as the strongest force in the National Council election. Corresponding information was confirmed to the “Kronen Zeitung” by FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl. With Rosenkranz there should be a good chance for the FPÖ to take over the presidency for the first time.
The 62-year-old was a member of the National Council between 2008 and 2019 before he was elected to the Ombudsman by the National Council. Most recently, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of Federal President. The National Council is expected to decide in November who will take over his position in the Ombudsman’s Office. The liberal social spokeswoman Dagmar Belakowitsch is considered the favorite.
Rosenkranz will be formally proposed for the office of president by the FPÖ parliamentary club on Wednesday. The election is scheduled for Thursday. At least the ÖVP and parts of the SPÖ and NEOS should be convinced by him. When asked by the APA, there was no response from any of the other parliamentary parties on Saturday evening. The Greens had already made it clear in advance that they would not support any liberal candidate.
Kickl justified Rosenkranz’s choice in the “Krone” by saying that his heart beats for parliamentarism and democracy: “He is the right choice for this responsible office.” As evidence, the FP boss also stated that Rosenkranz, as club chairman (under Black and Blue), had excellently fulfilled the responsible role of government coordinator.
The ÖVP is sending Peter Haubner into the race for the office of Second National Council President. Party leader Karl Nehammer announced this via “X” on Saturday evening. The former Secretary General of the Economic Association had long been considered the favorite for the post. The Salzburg resident has been a member of the National Council since 2001 and will therefore be a long-serving member of the ÖVP.
Nehammer justified the decision by saying that experience and competence counted. It can be assumed that Haubner will be formally confirmed at a meeting of the black parliamentary club next week. It is more than likely that he will receive a majority in the National Council.
Doris Bures, previously Second President, has already announced that she will run for the office of Third President this time after the Social Democrats only came out of the election in third place.
