The purpose of these measures is to limit uncontrolled pharmaceutical expenditurewhich has increased especially in hospital drugs. For the first half of 2023, spending on hospital drugs increased by 83%, causing concern in the pharmaceutical industry.

In a meeting with representatives of pharmaceutical companies, the minister committed to emergency funding of 20 million euros for the first half of 2023, while an increase in the budget for hospital drugs by 33 million euros is planned. It was also reported that around 20 million euros would be saved from cheaper drugs costing less than 30 euros.

For 2024, the budget for hospital drugs will increase by €50 million due to GDP growth, while an additional €20 million will be saved through the Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Technology (IFET). At the same time, the minister promised a better management of expenses and a 3% increase in funds for hospitals, as well as a saving of 50 million euros from the EOPYY through the reduction of fraud.
