What is the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service is an organization that seeks to provide weather information and forecasts, climate outlooks, and warnings in its areas of focus, based on continuous monitoring of the atmosphere and scientific knowledge.

The organization is of a scientific and technical nature and originated from Law No. 559 approved by the National Assembly on October 4, 1872.

At the request of Mr. Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, under the leadership of the President, the Argentine Meteorological Office (OMA) was established, reporting to the Ministry of Justice, Religious and Public Education.

Subsequently, as SMN explains, over the course of its institutional life, the organization came to rely on the following ministries and secretariats of the state:

  • In accordance with Law No. 3727 on the Organization of Ministries, OMA was transferred to the National Ministry of Agriculture.
  • In July 1924, the office was called the Weather Bureau, and in September 1927 the name was changed to the Bureau of Meteorology.
  • Under Law No. 12252 of September 28, 1935, OMA continued to rely on the Ministry of Agriculture and became the Directorate of Meteorology, Geophysics and Hydrology.
  • In accordance with the provisions of Decree No. 10,131 of May 5, 1945, on the basis of this Directorate, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) was established, under the Secretariat of Aviation.
  • Law No. 12,945 of the National Assembly of January 29, 1947 provides that Decree No. 10131/45 creating the SMN shall continue to have legal force.
  • According to Decree No. 5197 of March 9, 1950, SMN is affiliated to the Ministry of State Technical Affairs.
  • Decree No. 12248 of 22 June 1954 repealed the previous Decree (No. 5197/50) and provided that the SMN would again rely on the State Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
  • Decree No. 4686 of 7 May 1957 stipulated that SMN was no longer subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, but to the Ministry of National Aviation.
  • Finally, according to Decree No. 1689 of November 22, 2006, as of January 1, 2007, SMN was transferred to the current Secretariat of Science, Technology and Production of the Ministry of Defense.
