The head of the city’s emergency medical service told local media that Payne was taken to hospital but had suffered “very serious” injuries as a result of the fall and that there was “no chance of resuscitation”.

Fans also expressed shock and grief – with some gathering outside the Casa Sur hotel where Payne was found dead to sing along and hold an impromptu vigil.
Crying and hugging, they lit candles and hummed One Direction songs. They held a moment of silence, before applauding.
Emergency workers confirmed the death of the British singer, who was reportedly found on the inner patio of the hotel.
“I’m in shock right now. Liam has always been so kind to me,” American singer Charlie Puth said on Instagram. “He was one of the first major artists I worked with. I can’t believe he’s gone.”
US music channel MTV, streaming service Spotify (SPOT.N), and the British music awards BRITs expressed their grief on social media, sending their condolences to his family and loved ones.
Payne had a son, Bear, with British TV personality and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl in 2017.

On Snapchat, he told his followers about his plans for one of his days off, saying it was a “great day in Argentina” and that he planned to play polo.
The videos appear to be released days after they were taken, as they feature Payne’s friend Kate Cassidy, who uploaded videos of her return to Florida to social media earlier in the week.
“Today, we are riding. We’re going to ride some horses,” he said, in one of the videos.
“Think I’ll be playing polo again, which will put me out of action for about six weeks.
“It’s so hard, number one, my back and my neck to swing that mallet… or hammer, I think it’s called if you know.
“It hurts a lot, it’s very hard to do.”
