In Sweden, two people were punished for the oil spill in the Baltic Sea

The Marco Polo TT-Line passenger ferry ran aground south of Karlshamn early Sunday morning and all 75 passengers on board were safely evacuated.

Two crew members were fined for careless behavior in maritime traffic.

“Despite the limited field of vision, they did not use all available and useful means to locate the vessel and avoid the risk of collision,” prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg told AFP.

He pointed to earlier reports that the ship’s positioning system had failed and said that because the ship was sailing in fog, the crew had to turn on other systems, such as radar, to check the position.

“They relied on the electronic navigational chart despite the warnings and the reduced visibility,” Combier-Hogg said.

For certain crimes, Swedish prosecutors can issue fines directly without taking the accused to court.

One of the crew members was fined 40,000 kroner (3,400 euros) and the other 16,500 kroner (1,400 euros).

Local officials said Tuesday that it could take a year to clean up the area.

Earlier this week, the Coast Guard reported that the oil spill extended more than five kilometers out to sea

But on Thursday, the oil was no longer visible from aircraft on the surface of the sea as it sank deeper and began to approach the shores.

The coast guard said on Friday that the vessel was still stranded and that additional assistance from the Swedish Armed Forces had been called in to help clean up the spill.
