Zoltán Gera became the coach of the NB I team

Welcome to the Wild World of Kecskemét Football!

Oh, the sweet irony of football management! Zoltán Gera, a name that rings bells in the ears of Hungarian football fanatics, has just signed on as the head coach of Kecskemét. Now, as we all know, a coach’s job is to whip the team into shape, but it seems Gera might need a miracle—because the poor lads are currently sitting in last place! It’s like trying to climb Everest while wearing roller skates!

Changing of the Guard

In a twist fit for a soap opera, the management at Kecskemét decided that their previous coach, István Szabó, had done all he could. After all, he did the unimaginable: led a ragtag squad from obscurity to a shiny silver medal. But the honeymoon is over, and this season has been less “dancing in the clouds” and more “running in quicksand.”

Szabó deserves credit—he took a team that had more potential than a toddler with a crayon and transformed it into a contender! They stole points from Ferencváros like a great heist movie, but alas, now they’re at the bottom, dripping with the sweat of disappointment.

Meet Zoltán Gera

Now, stepping into those lofty shoes is Zoltán Gera, once a 97-cap national team player and a hero in the eyes of many. He spent a decade in England, playing football like a fine wine that’s been carefully aged. But coaching? Not so much. His track record looks like a rollercoaster on a bad day—up and down, with more downs than a soap star’s relationship history.

After a stint with the U21 national team and a brief cologne-scented experience at Vasas, where he got more time with the press than with his players, Gera is back. And with ambition coursing through his veins like a heady brew of espresso and anxiety, he appears ready to wrestle this ship back on course.

“I am full of ambition, but the most important thing is that the team performs as well as possible.”

This weekend, he faces Puskás Akadémia, a team that seems to have discovered the secret ingredient for success while Kecskemét has apparently been trying to boil water. The stakes are higher than a cat in a tree!

What Critics are Saying

The news of Gera’s appointment has sparked a cacophony of voices in the “country of ten million national team captains.” Social media has become a theater, with commentators lamenting the fate of Kecskemét and scratching their heads in disbelief. “What do you mean you couldn’t keep up with the success? You were supposed to be the *chosen one*! ”

A fan passionately pointed out in one of those heated Facebook rants: “Szabó took an NB III team made up of unknown players to the NBI in two years, resulting in silver behind Fradi!! What’s left for Gera, apart from knitting the team a cozy retirement blanket?”

The Bottom Line

As a new era dawns for Kecskemét, one must wonder: will Zoltán Gera be the coaching messiah they need or just another name in the annals of football history? The clock’s ticking, and with every match, the stakes rise higher. He’s been handed a brand new set of goals—let’s hope he doesn’t aim too low.

In football, as in life, sometimes it takes an absolute catastrophe to uncover the true diamond in the rough. Here’s hoping Kecskemét finds theirs before the final whistle awaits. Come on, Gera, give us a surprise—like scoring a goal in the last minute while blindfolded!

Zoltán Gera will be the head coach of Kecskemét.

The management of the NB I team announced on Tuesday that they have agreed with István Szabó, the coach until now, that the team can get out of the pit if they change the coach – writes the 24.hu. According to the signs, they did not search for a successor for long.

By the way, Szabó was successful at the head of the team for a long time, since under his leadership, Kecskemét moved up from the second division to NB I and immediately finished second in the table – with young Hungarian players – beating Ferencváros several times. Following the success, several football players from Kecskemét transferred to other clubs, and this season started worse. Specifically, the team is in last place.

Zoltán Gera, the former 97-time national team player, played football in England for ten years from 2004. He retired from the game in 2018 at the age of 29.

So far, he has not been as successful as a coach as he was as a player. He was assigned to the professional staff of the Hungarian national team, and from 2019 he was the federal coach of the U21 national team. In February of this year, Vasas, who is in the second division, signed him as head coach, but then he was dismissed following the fluctuating performance of the team.

“I am full of ambition, but the most important thing is that the team performs as well as possible. The first impressions are good, now the work can come,” said Gera about his new assignment, who also praised his predecessor.

The new coach will already have a difficult time this weekend, because Kecskemét plays Puskás Akadémia, which, on the other hand, is doing well.

Following the news, many people in the “country of ten million national team captains” feel sorry for both Gera and the team. The National Sport Online on his Facebook page according to many commentators, this sealed the fate of Kecskemét. “Szabó took an NB III team made up of unknown players to the NBI in two years, in his first year there he won a silver medal behind Fradi, he brought 6 players (I emphasize unknown players, except Horváth) to such a level that they became national team, whom he sold the club and they are surprised that there is no result”, analyzed an enthusiastic fan.
