“The Central Committee has no authority to disqualify a candidate”

“The party’s Statute provides that in the event of a vote of no confidence, a Congress is convened, where the members can decide whatever they want. We will be here until the end. The Congress is the highest body, according to the party’s Statute.

The Central Committee has no authority to disqualify a candidate. The base should remain active, vote for congressmen and not be disappointed”, emphasized the ousted President of SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis, three twenty-four hours after the Central Committee voted to exclude his candidacy, in the internal party elections for the selection of a new leadership.

With regard to the meeting of the Central Committee, which excluded him from the process of electing the leadership of SYRIZA, he argued that the “138” do not constitute a majority of the total of 295 members, with the prevailing conditions of not reaching a quorum initially, of the long delay in start of the meeting and the non-identification of those who voted.

“There was no ballot box in the voting and also, the votes were not counted”, he added, saying about the Central Committee that “the most important thing is that it does not have the power to exclude any nomination”, while he also read the Article on the authority of the Congress. “I don’t dispute the no-confidence motion, but what followed,” he further pointed out.

“The only thing that is threatened is the career of certain executives in the party – With me as President, the base will decide on everything”
“If I’ve been such a bad President, why don’t they let me lose? Should the base disapprove of me? They fear the wrath of the world, there will be a “wave” of Democracy, it has already been expressed,” he added.

“The extrajudicial is not a legal act, but a protest. Many times I have said that I will not take the party to court. If this was a pretext to exclude me, it was at their discretion. I firmly believe this, they were meeting to block the constitutional changes I wanted to bring to the party, while I was running to the fires. Fifty members of the Central Committee are paid by the party.

SYRIZA has a President and the party is its base, it must express itself. I predict that the Congress will be adjourned. Too many members are afraid of how we will get there. SYRIZA must prove that it remains a democratic party. I promised the people of the base that I will never betray them and that I will be here, until the end”, Stefanos Kasselakis also pointed out.
