They hold the first medicinal plant fair in Hernandarias

Asunción, IP Agency.- The first fair of natural remedies for tereré and mate was held, organized by the Tacuru Pucu Development Committee of Hernandarias. The activity took place in front of the headquarters of the aforementioned municipality.

The fair was held within the framework of the agreement between Itaipu Binacional and the Comprehensive Community Development Organization (Odeinco).

Rosalino Mendoza, one of the producers present at the event, highlighted the importance of this fair as a space for the commercialization of medicinal products, many of which come from the local nursery that was inaugurated last August with support from the Binacional.

«It is the first fair that we are holding within the framework of the project with Odeinco. We industrialize and commercialize medicinal products. Some products were already produced in the nursery, but others we had to bring from other places due to the short time we had to produce,” Mendoza explained.

The nursery, called Tacuru Pucu Development Committee, is located in Hernandarias and currently has 11 active producers. Mendoza also highlighted the fundamental role of the Binacional for the success of this initiative. «The support we receive from ITAIPU is important to make our products known and to relate to the community. The support of the authorities is crucial for us,” he stated.

Carmen Coronel, in charge of the Itaipu Medicinal Plants Project, explained that this fair is just the beginning of a series of events that will take place as part of the agreement.

«Most of the products offered here come from the new nursery that was recently inaugurated. In addition to this committee, four others are also involved in the agreement, among them the Kirito Pindo Indigenous Committee, from Mbaracayú, and the La Victoria Committee, from Laurel,” the professional explained.

Permanent backup

Itaipu has played a fundamental role in providing infrastructure and consolidating these groups of producers, not only by providing seedlings from the medicinal plant garden, but also by offering training and technical assistance to ensure the success and sustainability of these projects.

“Our goal is for these committees to be officially recognized and, in the future, market their products more widely,” Coronel commented.

He highlighted the commitment and motivation of the committees to continue with this project that promotes the sustainable use of medicinal plants. «This fair is the first, but we have others planned for this year. We will continue to support the committees on their path towards self-management and the commercialization of medicinal products,” he said.

This agreement with the NGO Odeinco is developed in the departments of Alto Paraná and Canindeyú. Its objective is to promote actions to strengthen the productive chain of the medicinal plants sector in the districts that are part of the Itaipu Biosphere Reserve (RBI).

Through this collaboration, we seek to promote sustainable development and improve the economic conditions of communities with the responsible commercialization of natural products, Itaipu reported.
