Red Cross sends a team and surgical material for the wounded in Lebanon

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced this Wednesday the sending of a surgical team specialized in the treatment of war wounds to a hospital in southern Beirutin Lebanon, as well as the provision of new medical supplies to care for around 2,000 critically ill patients and equipment intended to purify up to 50,000 liters of water.

“The surgical team, which includes an emergency doctor, a surgeon and an anesthetist, has experience in the unique and destructive injuries caused by weapons of war,” the ICRC said in a statement.

This team will work alongside the ICRC staff already present, consisting of 22 members, at the Rafik Hariri University Hospital, located in the south of the Lebanese capital. The operation will be carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, according to the statement.

This reinforcement of medical aid comes in the face of an escalation in hostilities and an increase in injuries that have come to saturate a health care system that was already collapsed, with the main objective being to save lives and relieve the exhausted medical personnel who were present during the war. .

“This critical assistance provides much-needed relief, but needs continue to increase considerably,” said the head of the ICRC delegation in Lebanon, Simone Casabianca-Aeschlimann.

The shipment of these medical supplies at the beginning of the month includes war surgery equipment capable of treating approximately 2,000 critically ill patients, depending on the severity of their injuries, as well as water purification supplies, which can treat up to 50,000 liters of water.

“While our surgical equipment and medical supplies will help ease the burden on healthcare professionals, sustained and safe humanitarian aid is urgently needed. The humanitarian crisis worsens every hour,” explained Casabianca-Aeschlimann.

The place of receipt of the medical supplies was the Rafik Hariri University Hospital to equip and supply the trauma unit.
