Meta Employee Confession, Claims of Layoffs Due to Trivial Things – detikFinance

Jakarta

A number of Meta employees have reportedly been fired for abusing the meal voucher system provided by the company. In this case, the employee used the voucher to buy toothpaste and detergent.

According to the BBC, Saturday (19/10/2024), Meta employees basically get a meal allowance of US$ 70 in the form of vouchers for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The vouchers were used to order food from Grubhub, a US fast food website.

In an anonymous post on social media, someone wrote that more than 30 people were fired last week for using vouchers to buy non-food items and exceeding the specified amount. Examples of non-food items purchased include toothpaste, toothbrushes, and wine glasses.

“They were given warnings to quit and most of them did, but were still fired three months later even after quitting,” said one social media user.

Former Meta security engineer, Jane Manchun Wong, said she had lost her job because she had been laid off. “I’m still trying to process this, but I’ve been told that my role at Meta is still in play,” he wrote in X.

Wong was hired for more than a year, as a software engineer after being named to the 2022 Forbes 30 under 30 list. The layoffs were first reported by the Verge and a spokesperson said in an anonymous post.

“Several teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy,” wrote the Verge

“This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees into different roles. In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for affected employees,” he concluded

Meta’s Meal Voucher Mishap: A Cheeky Commentary

Jakarta – Ah, the complexities of modern corporate life! When you think of tech giants like Meta, you might envision innovative breakthroughs or even a dystopia where “likes” are currency. But forget about flying cars or virtual reality; we’ve hit the jackpot with a story involving meal vouchers—yes, meal vouchers! Apparently, a gaggle of Meta employees decided that their $70 meal allowance would be better spent on toothpaste and detergent. Because what says “I love my job” more than making a buffet out of personal hygiene products?

Picture this: You’re three days into your work week and realize you’ve run out of toothpaste. What do you do? Instead of popping down to the nearest drugstore, you whip out that fancy meal voucher, quickly order a tube of toothpaste, and think, “Who needs breakfast when you can shine your pearly whites?” Genius! Or desperate? One can’t help but wonder about their brunch choices. “Oh, I’ll have the eggs benedict and a side of Crest, please.”

As reported by the BBC, over 30 employees faced the digital guillotine last week for flying too close to the sun—pun intended—when it comes to their food vouchers. Now, there’s a fine line between innovation and outright ludicrousness, and these fine folks certainly missed it. It seems that no one bothered to mention that Grubhub isn’t a one-stop-shop for your pantry essentials. What’s next? Ordering an espresso machine with your lunch? I mean, if the company is going to give you a boatload of cash for meals, why not throw in a 4-slice toaster while you’re at it?

Of course, some valiant souls tried to save face. According to a hastily written social media post from an anonymous employee, “They were given warnings to quit, and most of them did; but they were still fired three months later, even after quitting!” Well, that’s one way to keep your HR department busy! Talk about a corporate exit strategy. “Oh, you’re quitting? Brilliant! We’ll still fire you later. Just to keep it interesting!”

A former Meta security engineer, Jane Manchun Wong, shared her own saga, describing her turmoil after being laid off while still processing the news. I don’t know about you, but I can’t imagine transition consulting for someone transitioning out of a job they didn’t even know they had anymore! The poor thing probably thought all the time spent safeguarding the digital realm would save her, but it seems even that fell victim to Meta’s “cutting the fat” initiative.

And speaking of cutting, a spokesperson for the company stated, “Several teams are making changes to align resources with their long-term strategic goals.” Translation: “We are firing people, and we hope you like the taste of that.” It’s a corporate strategy that seems to favor calculus majors who can calculate exactly how many employees fit into the budget after a third-round lunch voucher scandal.

So here we are, folks. A world where employees are picking out plates in a fast-food app while the company’s watching the exits like hawks. You want fries with that creativity? I’m telling you, in the corporate jungle, even the meal vouchers aren’t safe.

In conclusion, one can only wonder where this will end. Perhaps employees will just save their meal vouchers for a wild BBQ—where someone improvises grilled toothpaste on a stick while declaring it “The Adulting Snack of the Year.” Whatever the outcome, one thing’s certain: Meta needs to rethink how they dispense food vouchers. After all, not all heroes wear capes; some buy toothpaste with corporate meal money, thinking, “I can still clean up my act.”
