“The last taxi driver” at the Lithographion theater through “the naked eye”

The film by Stergios Paschos “The last taxi driver” will be screened on Wednesday 23 October at 8.15 and 10.30 in the evening at the Lithografion theater by the “naked eye”, i.e. Nikolaos E. Kavadias.

With “The Last Taxi Driver” a series of screenings of three Greek films closes: first “Unwanted” by Marianna Oikonomou, then, in a midnight screening, “The Single House” by Joakim Mylonas and, finally, “The Last Taxi Driver” by Stergios Paschos.

CASE

Thomas, a fifty-year-old taxi driver, lives with his wife, Maria, and his teenage son, Taso.
He studied Philology and loves literature very much, but he never managed to live up to the expectations he had of himself.

A client’s suicide brings his repressed to the surface and plunges him into love obsession.
The taxi driver hero of Stergios Paschos (Kostas Koroneios), claims that he works at night to collect stories.
He does not consider himself “just a transporter”, but a “shaper of consciousness”, who listens to the needs of the client.

However, when he meets a beautiful girl (Klelia Andriolatou), who is related to his self-made client, all his certainties crumble, and the situation gets out of his control…

Stergios Paschos moves on the razor’s edge: in the gray zones that govern human relationships, in the subtle nuances of human temperament and psychology, in the contradictions of intentions and behavior.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

“Starting to write The Last Taxi Driver, my intention was to make a film with the structure of a police thriller, but with the central theme of the protagonist’s existential search.

I think about it now and laugh.

Alas, if a movie went exactly as someone planned it in their head. It would probably be a very boring movie.
Looking at the finished film, I feel that, after all, we have made a bitter, black, comedy with elements of a thriller about a man, who fights stupidly with his inner emptiness and thus causes destruction around him.
I know that this hero can be quite annoying, because he is part of an era that is ending, but also because we live in an era that judges, without any desire to understand.

However, believing in a cinema that explores and avoids pointing fingers or drawing easy conclusions, I tried to see Thomas and the rest of the characters in the film, for what they are and not to conveniently place them under some label. Your conclusions.”
