ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, October 18, 2024 -/African Media Agency (AMA)/- The African Forum for the Environment in Extractive Industries (FAFEIX) aims to generate constructive discussions, promote the establishment of strategic partnerships and encourage concrete actions in favor of a more sustainable and inclusive exploitation of natural resources on the African continent.

Organized by the NGO Acting for the Environment in Extractive Industries (AEIE), FAFEIX therefore constitutes a unique opportunity to bring together the main actors, namely government representatives, businesses, civil society, researchers as well as experts, with a view to addressing the challenges and opportunities inherent in the environmental and social management of extractive industries in Africa. Committed to being a vector of positive change, this event is resolutely part of an approach aimed at promoting green economic growth.

“Our vocation is to be a source of expertise for the renovation of extractive sites and to promote environmental and social practices within the African extractive sector,” explains Mr. Bohoussou Kouakou Raymond, president of the NGO AEIE.

“Africa is full of immense mining and energy resources. Like many countries on the continent, Côte d’Ivoire has enormous potential. From oil to natural gas, including gold, diamonds, iron, bauxite and cobalt, these resources are at the heart of our economy,” explains Mr. Bohoussou Kouakou Raymond, president of the NGO AEIE. These significant mineral reserves make Côte d’Ivoire ripe for exploration and mining, as evidenced by the recent discovery of a large, world-class gold deposit in the northwest of the country. . It constitutes one of the main levers of growth of countries providing substantial income to States and creating jobs at national and local levels.

It constitutes one of the main levers of growth of countries providing substantial income to States and creating jobs at national and local levels.

In Côte d’Ivoire, according to the Ministry of Mines, Oil and Energy, mining companies generated, in 2021, a cumulative turnover of 1,154 billion CFA francs, for an investment volume of 197 billion CFA francs. This allowed the State to collect tax revenue amounting to 227 billion CFA francs. However, the explosion of the mining industry is not without consequences for the environment.

The impact of mineral extraction on the environment is not limited to the direct consequences on water sources or the territory but must also take into account the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by this activity. . “Massive deforestation, loss of biodiversity, water pollution, soil degradation and impacts on the health of local populations are all too common realities in mining areas. Added to this are greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change, a major global challenge,” warns Mr. Bohoussou Kouakou Raymond.

In view of these realities, “we want to create a framework for discussions and concrete solutions around the challenges and opportunities presented by the rehabilitation of mining sites in Africa. », he adds.

From February 19 to 21, 2025, FAFEIX participants will have the opportunity to address several essential themes:

  • The regulatory framework for the rehabilitation of mining sites in Africa;
  • Technological innovations and best practices in this area;
  • The crucial role of young people and women in the rehabilitation of mining sites;
  • Management of mining waste and residues, and of course;
  • The contribution of mining rehabilitation to the fight against climate change.

Alongside the conferences and round tables, FAFEIX will host training workshops to strengthen the skills of players in the sector, as well as exhibitions intended to highlight the most innovative initiatives. It will conclude with an awards ceremony intended to reward the best players in the field of environmental protection in the mining industries.
