Egypt.. What will happen to the subsidized loaf of bread amid the increase in fuel prices?

The Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, stressed that the price of a loaf of subsidized local bread would not be affected and that it would remain stable according to the ration cards at a price of 20 piasters per loaf.

The Egyptian Minister of Supply indicated that the state, represented by the Ministry’s General Authority for Supply Commodities, takes into account all cost elements and production inputs for manufacturing a loaf of subsidized local bread, including the price of diesel and gas, in light of the decisions of the Automatic Pricing Committee for Petroleum Products.

This is the third time that the Egyptian government has raised the prices of petroleum products during 2024.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said in July that the prices of petroleum products will gradually rise until the end of 2025, adding that the government can no longer bear the burden of fuel subsidies amid increased consumption.

According to the Egyptian Minister of Supply, “the citizen gets subsidized local bread through the ration card at a price of 20 piasters,” and the state continues to bear the difference in production costs and pay it to bakery owners through the Supply Commodities Authority.

The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced, on Friday morning, an increase in the prices of gasoline and diesel in Egypt, starting today, Friday, after a meeting of the Automatic Pricing Committee for Petroleum Products, which is responsible for reviewing and setting the selling prices of these products.

The decision stipulated that gasoline 95 would be priced at 17 pounds per liter, gasoline 92 would be at 15.25 pounds per liter, gasoline 80 would be at 13.75 pounds per liter, the price of diesel would be 13.50 pounds per liter, the price of kerosene would be 13.50 pounds per liter, and the price of a ton of diesel allocated to other industries would be 9,500 pounds. Car fuel gas is priced at 7 pounds per cubic meter, and the price of diesel fuel for electricity and food industries has been fixed.
