Medical warnings regarding excessive intake of paracetamol

However, doctors have warned of the dangers of taking excessive amounts of this analgesic, as many believe it is relatively safe.

Dr Gerard Sinovich, a pain consultant at Alterneaf, says: “Over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol, are a default treatment for pain. However, they should not be used for more than 3 consecutive days without medical advice.”

He adds: “There is a lack of awareness about the long-term effects of using these medications. Serious side effects can include liver damage, kidney problems, and breathing problems.”

Here are 5 possible side effects of using painkillers on a daily basis:

-Fatigue and exhaustion

Fatigue is a common side effect of paracetamol due to the acetaminophen content. People may feel tired and sleepy if taken frequently.

– Respiratory problems

Research suggests that frequent use of paracetamol can increase the likelihood of wheezing, and is associated with increased asthma symptoms, with the effect being greater with repeated use of the drug.

– Liver failure

Regular use of paracetamol, even in recommended doses, can cause liver damage.

-Heart attacks

Studies have shown that regularly taking paracetamol, which contains sodium, is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure.

If a person takes the maximum amount of paracetamol, he or she may also exceed the maximum daily dose of sodium.

Change in color of fingers and lips

In rare cases, allergic reactions to paracetamol may cause the skin, tongue or lips to turn blue or grey.

Other symptoms of an allergic reaction include: sudden swelling of the lips, mouth, or tongue, feeling dizzy, and difficulty breathing.
