massive blackout in Cuba due to total disconnection of the electrical system

At 11:07 am today, Cuba suffered a total disconnection from the National Electric System (SEN), which left the country without electricity.

According to the Electrical Union, the main cause was the shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, one of the most important plants in the country. Currently, work is being done to restore electrical service.

This Thursday, during a television appearance in which more than half of the country was without electricity, the prime minister and the general director of the National Electrical Union announced the end of operation of the country’s two main thermoelectric plants.

This is what they said:

About the situation of thermoelectric plants: «Thermal generation faces a problem: we have not managed to put into operation either Felton or Guiteras, which are two important units. After the summer, relatively short maintenance was required for both. This could cause difficulties in the coming days.

Plant maintenance: It is planned to carry out maintenance work, both light and more in-depth, at the Felton and Guiteras plants, essential for electricity generation from national crude oil. Tasks include cleaning boilers and condensers, as well as repairing broken machines.

There was no improvement, but there was a massive blackout in Cuba

The government has failed to sustain the short-term promises offered last night. This Thursday morning, the general director of Electricity of the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, reported on state television that an improvement was expected this Friday with the arrival of new fuel supplies. This could alleviate the power outages that have affected the country in recent days, he assured.

Although he acknowledged that the outlook would be “complex,” Guerra pointed out that, with the arrival of fuel to both Havana and Moa, it was expected that electricity generation would begin to be restored in those areas on Friday. However, Cuba once again pays in full for the total disconnection of the electrical system with the departure of Guiteras.
