In response to the protest, Punjab’s education department and home department issued separate notifications on Thursday night, ordering closure of educational institutions and ban on public gatherings on Friday and Saturday.
Although the notifications did not specifically mention the protest against the alleged rape, the students said the shutdown was due to the protests.

According to a police statement: ‘Police are fully prepared to deal with any law and order situation and vandalism or violation of law under the guise of protest is not acceptable under any circumstances.’
