Jakarta –
The process of exploring plans for the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren seems to be ending towards the end of 2024. These signs were revealed by the boss of the cellular operator.
Smartfren President Director, Merza Fachys, said that currently the due diligence process is still ongoing. Nevertheless, the fate of the marriage between the two cellular operators will be revealed soon.
“Currently the due diligence process is continuing and hopefully it can be completed in the near future. If the process is complete, of course we hope the results will be positive so that the merger plan continues to the next stage,” said Merza to detikINET.

Furthermore, Merza assured that the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren could support the telecommunications industry in Indonesia to become healthier, as well as providing the best benefits for all interests, such as customers, industry and shareholders.
Meanwhile, customers, the impact that occurs when XL Axiata and Smartfren merge, as Merza said, can feel that the quality of service is even better.
“For customers, of course this means they will get an excellent telecommunications experience in all service areas,” said Merza.
Separately, regarding the merger with Smartfren, XL Axiata was reluctant to reveal details to detikINET. Group Head of Corporate Communications XL Axiata Reza Zahid Merza, said that regarding the exploration period between the two telecommunications companies, this is the domain of shareholders.
“The update is still in the due diligence process,” he concluded.
For information, the shareholders of Smartfren and XL Axiata, namely PT Wahana Inti Nusantara, PT Global Nusa Data and PT Bali Media Telekomunikasi (Sinar Mas) and Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata), agreed to enter a new phase of the plan to merge their two subsidiaries.
The two shareholders of Smartfren and XL Axiata have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU), on Wednesday (15/5).
If the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren is realized, then the number of cellular operators in Indonesia will only be left with three companies.

Telecom Merger Shenanigans: XL Axiata and Smartfren Unite!
Well, well, well, folks! It seems the telecommunications world in Indonesia is getting a bit of a shake-up with the prospective merger between XL Axiata and Smartfren. If you’re not already on the edge of your seat (or possibly your data plan), you will be by the end of this!
Jakarta has been buzzing like a beehive on double espresso ever since Merza Fachys, the big boss at Smartfren, spilled the beans on the ongoing due diligence. That’s a fancy way of saying they’re checking each other’s bank statements before they tie the knot. Because, let’s face it, no one wants to wake up to a nasty surprise like finding out your partner has a hidden shopping addiction! Or worse, a penchant for poor service plans.
But fear not, dear users! Merza insists that the end of this “I do” ceremony will shower us with nothing but love, good quality service, and perhaps an overflow of data. You know, like a romantic gesture where your partner surprises you with a buffet of unlimited calls and texts. Who wouldn’t want that?
Now, here’s the kicker: if this merger goes through, we’ll only have three cellular operators left standing in Indonesia. It’s like the Hunger Games out here, folks! I can already picture the last three operators battling it out in a high-stakes game of “Who’s Got the Best Coverage?” Talk about a reality show I’d binge-watch!
But let’s be real, this isn’t just a romantic escapade for the telecom companies involved. Merza claims that this merger will lead to a healthier telecommunications industry. He’s painting a picture where everyone—customers, shareholders, and the industry—feels the love. “An excellent telecommunications experience in all service areas,” he claims. Sounds great, but we’ll see if this marriage leads to a happily ever after or just a tough divorce over billing disputes!
What the Merger Means for You
As a customer, you must be wondering how this love fest will affect you. Well, brace yourselves because the quality of service is allegedly set to improve! So, if you’ve ever found yourself screaming “Can you hear me now?” into the void, you might soon have a clearer line to your loved ones—although I’d still recommend yelling it into your phone just for effect.
As for XL Axiata, they seem to be playing it coy when it comes to specific merger details. Their spokesperson, Reza Zahid Merza (we assume he’s not related), obviously knows how to keep secrets—shrouded in a cloak of corporate intrigue! So don’t hold your breath for any juicy details just yet; it sounds like shareholders have the ultimate say in this romance.
Moreover, the shareholders of both companies have already signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU). Now, if that isn’t the most romantic term in corporate speak, I don’t know what is! Seriously, it sounds like they swiped right on each other but still need to “see where this goes.” Classic modern love story!
In Conclusion
So, as we sit back and watch this merger saga unfold, we can only hope that it leads to better service, happier customers, and maybe even a few less dropped calls. After all, with three operators in the game, it’s bound to become a more competitive matchmaking process. Who knows? Perhaps love will flourish in the digital air, proving that mergers can occasionally lead to a win-win situation, unless, of course, you’re on a very shady new plan.
So, keep your phones charged, your data plans checked, and your ears peeled— because the next chapter in Indonesian telecommunications might just be the rom-com we didn’t know we needed!
