4 ultra-processed foods increase the risk of death

The study, conducted by the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, analyzed the diets and health outcomes of more than 114,000 American adults over more than three decades.

Researchers were able to identify the four main types of ultra-processed foods associated with an increased risk of death, which include:

Processed meat

– Artificially sweetened drinks

– Desserts based on dairy products

Ultra-processed breakfast foods (such as cereals)

Processed meat was most closely associated with an increased risk of death from any cause, Surrey Live reports.

The consumption of some ultra-processed foods, such as processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and artificially sweetened beverages, should be avoided or limited to prevent health risks, as these foods often contain chemical additives and are significantly altered from their original form. They also often use extensive industrial processing specifically designed to extend the shelf life of foods and increase consumer appeal by enhancing flavour, making these products contain excessive amounts of added salt, sugars and fats.

Many studies increasingly link the consumption of ultra-processed foods to a range of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal disease, and depression.
