Five children and young people with child welfare links have died since February last year

The 16-year-old twins Mina and Mille died as a result of an overdose in Spydeberg last winter while they were in the care of children’s welfare. Reports in the wake of the deaths made harsh judgments about the aid equipment and the cooperation between the services.

In the time that has passed, four girls and one boy connected to child welfare institutions have died, the Directorate for Children, Youth and Families (Bufdir) informs TV 2.

– Two of these deaths occurred in 2023, three occurred in 2024, says division director Jan Kato Fremstad in Bufdir, who adds that three of them were under 18 years old.

They do not want to disclose the causes of death and indicate that the cases are being investigated by the police.

Minister for Children and Families Kjersti Toppe (Sp) tells TV 2 that the government is in the process of making major changes to the offer at child welfare institutions.

– This spring, the government presented a separate strategy for better institutional child protection. In it, we set out a joint political course for the long-term work of providing good and coordinated help to the children who live in child welfare institutions. Among the goals in the strategy is that children with large and complex needs should receive coordinated help, and that children living in institutions should receive good health care, she states.
