Like last week in Shanghai, Arthur Rinderknech left the Antwerp tournament in the 2nd round, this Thursday, after his defeat in two sets (7-6, 7-6) against the American Marcos Giron. The Varois obtained a set point in the first set but let it pass.
Encore repeated for Arthur Rinderknech. A week after taking the door to the Shanghai Masters 1000 after the slap received (6-3, 6-2) against the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (while he had also disposed in two sets of the giant American server Reilly Opelka for his debut in the Chinese tournament two days earlier), the Varois was again successful in the second round of the tournament, this Thursday in Antwerp. Opposed to Marcos Giron, 47th in the ranking and seeded number 8 in the event, Rinderknech did better than resist the American who had created a surprise in the 2nd round in Shanghai by bringing down Karen Khachanov, 26th in the world. Unfortunately for the executioner of the very young Belgian player Alexander Blockx (19 years old) in the first round, this meeting was decided on two decisive games, and the 29 year old French player lost both (8-6 and 7-4) against the winner of the Newport tournament last July, and whom our representative had beaten only once (last season in Chengdu) in the two previous confrontations between the two players (Editor’s note: 1-1 before Thursday’s match).
Rinderknech can bite his fingers
In the two rounds of this game which lasted almost two hours (1h52 of play), the balance could have tipped in favor of the Frenchman or the American. She finally leaned twice towards Giron, who had started the tie-break of the second set better but not the first, however, which had seen Rinderknech distance himself (4-2 then 5-3) without however manage to hold on until the end. A scenario all the more regrettable since if it was the ex-member of the Top 50 (42nd at his best ranking) who had to put aside several break points first in this match, it was also he who had obtained a set point in the first set, at 5-4 in his favor. An opportunity that the Varois may regret, who has not scored two victories since last August.
