Kenyan President William Ruto appointed Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as the new vice-president on Friday October 18, a few hours after the historic impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, declared the President of the National Assembly.
“This morning, I received a message from His Excellency, the President, regarding the appointment of Professor Kithure Kindiki […] to fill the vacant position of Vice President of the Republic of Kenya, following the dismissal of the previous holder of the position,” Moses Wetangula announced to MPs.
Rigathi Gachagua was dismissed from the vice-presidency on Thursday following an unprecedented procedure, the culmination of several months of conflict between President William Ruto and his number two.
The Senate found Rigathi Gachagua guilty of five of the eleven charges contained in the impeachment motion. It was enough for the upper house to find him guilty of one count for him to be removed from office.
Rigathi Gachagua, 59, notably accused of corruption and abuse of power, becomes the first vice-president removed from power as part of such a procedure, provided for by the 2010 Constitution.
