The best time to observe the giant moon with the naked eye

This was stated by Lyudmila Koshman, an astronomer at the Moscow Planetarium.

She said: “The giant moon is expected to appear on Thursday, October 17, and on this day the moon will be at its closest distance to the Earth.”

She said that astronomers monitor the moon at the moments of its various phases. They are more interested in the separation, as the line of change between the light and dark parts, that is, day and night, in which case monitoring craters and other terrain components may be interesting.

During the full moon, it can be observed with the naked eye. The moon will appear as soon as the sun disappears below the horizon and will remain in the sky throughout the evening and night.

The scientist explained: “At midnight, the moon is high in the south and can be seen beautifully. The most interesting moments are when it rises or sets. There is also the phenomenon of the full moon, that is, when it appears gigantic against the background of distant buildings, trees and some structures, especially if there are no clouds, the moon will be illuminated by the sun, and it will be very beautiful, and it will be impossible not to notice it.

According to the astronomer, the giant moon is not a scientific term. This is the name given to the phenomenon when the full moon phase passes through the perigee (the point of its orbit closest to the Earth). On Thursday, the gap between these two events will be minimal in 2024. The moon will be closest to the Earth at 3.47 Moscow time (at a distance of 357.172 kilometers), and the full moon will occur after 10 hours and 31 minutes, that is, at 14.28 Moscow time.

Cushman said that similar phenomena had occurred on September 18 and August 19, but after that the period between the full moon phase and the passage of perigee was 10 hours and 41 minutes, and 13 hours and 23 minutes, respectively.
