Mexico ends the diplomatic “pause” with the US ambassador

MEXICO CITY.— During her “Mañanera del Pueblo” conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, reported this Friday the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, met yesterday, ending the “diplomatic pause” that former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) had imposed on the US ambassador due to “criticism” against the recent judicial reform.

“The chancellor met yesterday with the United States ambassador, with Ken Salazar, we have good relations with all the countries of the world,” stated the president, who nevertheless excluded Ecuador and Peru from this equation, with which Mexico maintains diplomatic conflicts.

Sheinbaum Pardo explained that the meeting served to establish some general bilateral guidelines to organize the relationship between both countries in a “very important” way.

“If you want to discuss any issue related to the Ministry of Energy because there are American businessmen interested in investing and want to know the availability, then through the Foreign Ministry,” said the president.

The bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States has experienced ups and downs, such as the criticism launched by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) of the US anti-drug policy and American concern about the controversial judicial reform sought by the election. of the judges by popular vote.

Last week Claudia Sheinbaum and the president of the United States, Joe Biden, held their first telephone conversation since the Mexican president took office, in which they discussed “bilateral cooperation in economic, cultural and commercial matters.” .

Last Wednesday, the Mexican Foreign Minister explained that President Claudia Sheinbaum has asked to follow up on these “high political level” conversations soon.
