Protest in Rawalpindi over the alleged rape of a student in Lahore, 250 people arrested

Rawalpindi Police has said on Thursday that Lahore In the case of the alleged rape of a female student of a private college Rawalpindi At least 250 protestors have been arrested.

Rawalpindi Police said in a statement on X that ‘non-student elements are also among those arrested.’

Earlier, the police had said in their statement that ‘the process of identifying the students through video footage and photographs (has been started).’

The police statement further said that the accused involved will be punished according to the law by the honorable court and ‘vandalism, arson or any illegal activity will not be tolerated. Those who endanger the lives of fellow students, teachers and citizens will be dealt with severely.

The police also asked parents to keep a close watch on their children and keep them away from any illegal activities, saying ‘a criminal record can ruin the future of students.’

Rawalpindi Police personnel have been deployed at various locations across the city. According to the statement: ‘Police are fully prepared to deal with any law and order situation and vandalism or violation of law under the guise of protest is not acceptable under any circumstances.

“Those involved in illegal activities will be dealt with with iron hands, the entire situation is being monitored, action will also be taken against the elements behind the protest.”

Proceedings in Lahore High Court

On the other hand, the Lahore High Court has summoned the IG Punjab Police in a personal capacity along with the report while hearing the petition filed for a high-level investigation related to the recent incidents in the educational institutions on Thursday.

The court has also summoned Advocate General Punjab and Registrar of Lahore College for Women University in personal capacity.

Earlier yesterday, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz had said that the plot of the ‘false news’ of the rape of a student of a private college in Lahore comes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and foreign social media accounts.

Maryam Nawaz said during the press conference on Wednesday that no evidence of the alleged rape of the female student was found in the incident reported on October 10.

“Our management and the police received a report that a female student had been raped in a private college in Punjab. A security guard was accused of being involved in it, on which the management took immediate action, from that day to today. We are looking for the rape victim.’

Maryam Nawaz said that a network is involved in the spread of ‘fake news’ and those who will be identified through investigation will be given exemplary punishment.

A few days ago, the news of the alleged rape of a female student of a private college in Lahore by a security guard of the college went viral on social media, after which the police started their operation. Meanwhile, students of the college protested outside the college on Monday and some students were injured in the crowd by the security personnel.

In this regard, a video statement of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Defense Syeda Shahrbanu Naqvi was played on the official social media on Monday, while Punjab Police also played a statement of Shahrbanu Naqvi on its X account.

In this statement, ASP Shahrbanu Naqvi said: ‘The unfortunate situation in Lahore was due to disinformation. We heard that a female student of a private college who was allegedly raped was taken to a private hospital.’

He added: ‘We checked the records of this private hospital. It revealed that no rape victim girl was admitted to this hospital.’

The spokesman of the Punjab Police also said in a statement issued on Tuesday that if any citizen has any information regarding the alleged incident, they should inform the Virtual Women Police Station.
