National rice production for consumption in 2024 is estimated at 30.34 million tons. This means that domestic rice production has decreased by 0.76 million tonnes from last year’s realization.

The projection for rice consumption was obtained by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) from the results of a sample frame area (KSA) survey on rice harvest area and rice production area.

“Rice production for food consumption by the population in 2024 is estimated to reach 30.34 million tonnes, or a decrease of 0.76 million tonnes compared to last year,” said Acting Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti at a press conference, Jakarta, Tuesday (15/ 10).

He explained that the projected decline in consumption rice production was caused by a decline in production that occurred in the January-April 2024 period (subround I). In that period, rice production was recorded at 11.07 million tonnes, lower than the same period in 2023 of 12.98 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, rice production in May-August 2024 (subround II) was recorded to have increased by 0.16 million tonnes from 10.65 million tonnes to 10.81 million tonnes. Meanwhile, production in September-December 2024 (subround III) is predicted to reach 8.46 million tons, an increase of 1 million tons from the realization in the same period last year.

The forecast for consumption rice production refers to the projected 2024 rice harvest area which is estimated at 10.05 million hectares (Ha), down 0.17 Ha from 2023 which reached 10.21 million Ha.

With the estimated rice harvest area, BPS found that the projected production of milled dry grain (GKG) throughout 2024 would reach 52.66 million tons of GKG, 1.32 million tons of GKG lower than production in 2023 which reached 53.98 million tons of GKG.

Other BPS data shows that during January-September 2024, Indonesia imported 3.23 million tons of rice. Most of the rice is imported from Thailand, Vietnam and Bangladesh. (Mir/P-3)
