BRICS establishes a joint platform for nuclear energy

A meeting of representatives of nuclear sector companies from the BRICS countries was held in the “Atom” pavilion at the exhibition of the achievements of the peoples of Russia “VDNK” in the Russian capital, Moscow.

At the meeting, the initiative was discussed and future plans were put forward regarding the work of the platform by the largest nuclear energy companies in the BRICS group.

The Director General of the Russian company Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, stated at the end of the meeting that the legal procedures for establishing the platform have already begun, stressing that all participants supported Russia’s proposal to establish a nuclear energy platform for the BRICS group.

The main objective of the platform is to develop and implement best practices and advanced methods regarding energy and non-energy applications of nuclear technologies used for peaceful purposes in the markets of the ten BRICS countries.

As well as developing mechanisms to stimulate the implementation of nuclear energy projects in the BRICS countries, and the head of Rosatom confirmed that the platform will expand in line with the expansion of the BRICS group.

Rosatom is a pioneer in the nuclear energy sector, and the Russian company is implementing projects to build nuclear power plants to generate electric power in many countries of the world, including BRICS such as Egypt, China and India.

Rosatom is building the Dabaa nuclear station in Egypt, and the Okkuyu station in Turkey. The company is also seeking to win a project to build a nuclear station in Saudi Arabia.

BRICS is an international group that was established in 2006, and Russia has assumed its presidency since the beginning of this year, 2024. A summit of the group is scheduled to be held in Kazan, Russia, on October 22-24.

In addition to Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, Egypt, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Ethiopia have joined BRICS since the beginning of 2024.
