Petro proposes constituent assembly in case his reforms are not approved

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petroproposed this Friday the creation of a national constituent assembly if the reforms presented by his government are not approved and that are currently in the hands of Congress.

“If this possibility of a popularly elected government, in the middle of this State and under the Constitution of Colombia, cannot apply the Constitution because they surround it to not apply it and prevent it, then Colombia has to go to a national constituent assembly”Petro explained at an event held in Puerto Resistencia.

According to the Colombian president, “The institutions that we have in Colombia today are not capable of living up to the social reforms that the people, through their vote, decreed, demanded, commanded and ordered”.

“The national constituent assembly must transform the institutions so that they obey the people in their mandate of peace and justice, which is easy to achieve in Colombia”he added.

However, it is feared that the fact will not be taken well by Colombians, who a few weeks ago took to the streets to protest against the government.

The call made by the Colombian opposition led the participants to demonstrate for different reasons, such as the national economy, security and freedom of expression, as well as the recent health reform ordered by the president.

On the street, Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay said that “This is not about defending an ideological position; “It’s about defending the country.”.

Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Ibagué, Cúcuta, Manizales, Neiva, Valledupar, Tunja, Barranquilla and Santa Marta They were some of the cities where the opposition’s call against Petro’s government was fulfilled.
