Cuban baseball player Raúl González requests asylum in the US from the Canadian border

Cuban baseball player Raúl González, a member of the last Cuban baseball teams, has requested asylum on the border between the United States and Canada, according to sports journalist Yasel Porto on his social networks.

“Reliable sources close to the subject have confirmed to me that the outstanding player Raúl González has decided to break with Cuban baseball and look for a new residence. “Raúl showed up at the Canadian border with the United States with the intention of entering the latter country,” Porto wrote on his Facebook profile.

According to the report, González made this decision after being excluded from the Cuban team for the Premier 12 tournament.

“The experienced infielder from Avilés has decided to change the course of his life (…) The Tigres Avileños team also communicated about this situation, pointing out that Raúl González, who was part of the national team for several years, even participating in events in the United States, has already “It is not part of it,” added Porto.

González traveled to Canada with a Canadian visa and is currently under investigation by immigration authorities, who will determine his status or final destination, according to the journalist.

The infielder had a Canadian visa due to his participation in the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) in Canada, where he played with the Kitchener Panthers under the auspices of the Cuban baseball federation.

The Intercounty Baseball League is the premier baseball league in Canada, made up of eight teams: Barrie, Brantford, Kitchener, London, Toronto, Guelph, Welland and Hamilton. The league brings together former major league players and outstanding college players.

González was one of the best players last season with the Panthers, in 2023. He even became player of the month for May in the entire league.

The player from Avila, Raúl González, debuted in 2006 in the National Series with the Tigres de Ciego de Ávila, his native province, and participated in 19 Cuban championships before requesting asylum to reside in the United States.
