“Adaptable and evolving” .. “Prada” designs a futuristic space suit for the astronauts of the 2026 moon mission

Prada, which was founded in Milan in 1913, collaborated with Axiom Space to provide advice on the design of the space suit and the materials used in its manufacture.

The new suit, dubbed AxEMU (Extravehicular Mobility Unit), is described as “scalable and adaptable” for use in missions on the lunar surface and in low Earth orbit.

Prada confirmed that its design team contributed to the selection of materials and features for the suit, in addition to the sewing techniques that enhance the suit’s performance.

The developed suit is distinguished by its ability to withstand harsh conditions, including freezing temperatures in the shaded areas of the moon, with a design that ensures high flexibility of movement of astronauts, whether male or female, for a period of up to at least 8 hours.

Other spacesuit features include: variable suit pressure, a carbon dioxide filtration system, and a life support backpack. It also includes a white heat-reflective outer layer, in addition to an advanced helmet with special coatings to enhance the vision of astronauts, and gloves specially designed for them.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Social Responsibility at Prada, expressed his great pride in the result, noting that this collaboration is only the beginning of a long-term partnership with Axiom Space.

Axiom Space explained that this is the first time it has benefited from the expertise of other industries to improve the design of its space suits. The suit has undergone extensive testing, including simulated low gravity.

The suit is scheduled to be used on NASA’s Artemis 3 mission, a crewed mission to land on the moon in September 2026.
