Prime Minister: education has a privileged position in the budget, as a result other sectors suffer

“Education already has a privileged position in our budgets, and it must be said very frankly that this is happening at the expense of other sectors. Then social security or health are simply affected, which are proportionally more burdened by the fact that education funding is in line with the European Union average,” the Prime Minister told LRT radio on Tuesday.

“This means that according to our capabilities, according to our budget, according to the amount of taxes we agree to pay, we allocate a proportionally larger part to education,” added I.Šimonytė.

According to her, during the term of this Government, the wage fund will increase by 80 percent after evaluating the 2024 plan.

“This is a huge amount of money, which will be allocated to the additional payment of the work of pedagogues, scientists and teachers,” said the Prime Minister.

Several thousand Lithuanian teachers went on strike last Friday, after the trade union of Lithuanian education workers, which represents them, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports did not reach an agreement on the pace of raising teachers’ salaries. The strike is planned to continue for about a month.

The government proposes to raise salaries for teachers next year in two stages: from January – by 10%, and from September – so much so that the average teacher’s salary reaches 130%. average national wage.

About 300 million will be needed to increase teachers’ salaries next year. euros.

The trade union led by Andrias Navickos is not satisfied with such proposals of the ministry. She demanded that teachers’ salaries be increased by 20 percent starting this September, another 30 percent from January of next year, and she also raised other demands, such as reducing the number of students in classes, the workload of teachers, and improving working conditions.

On Monday, this trade union submitted compromise proposals regarding the demands to the ministry, they will be discussed in the negotiations to be held on Tuesday.

At that time, the Minister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakštas and four other trade unions, including the Lithuanian Education and Science Trade Union led by Egidijus Milešinas, agreed last Thursday to prepare a plan by May of next year, how the wages of teachers will be increased after 2024.

On Monday, E. Milešina’s trade union decided not to strike, and will sign the updated collective agreement of the branch.
