The latest Originals on Netflix: series full of secrets gets 4.5 stars – FilmTotaal

Netflix has put three new series online in recent days. The reviewers of Series Total let you know why you really shouldn’t miss them, or maybe why.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft | Netflix
Movie adaptations of video games are no longer relegated to mediocrity in Hollywood. Netflix has certainly contributed to this, with successful adaptations Castlevania in Arcane.

Thus, there were high expectations for a Netflix-produced animated series based on the iconic Tomb Raiderfranchise. However, the end result is disappointing.

The Secret of the River | Netflix
The Secret of the River reveals immediately in the first scene what the secret of the river is. It is an event that Erik and Manuel will both carry with them for the rest of their lives.

The two students spend a summer together in a small village in Mexico’s Oaxaca region, where Manuel stays with his grandmother, who teaches him the original Zapotec language. It is one of the fine details that contribute to the intimate and authentic atmosphere of this series.

Deception | Netflix
Things are heated on the Amalfi Coast. At the instep of the Italian boot is a luxurious hotel overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea where sixty-year-old Gabriella is in charge.

When this hotelier looks out the window of her spacious living room, she sees a thirty-something naked diving into the sea.

Netflix New Releases: A Comedic Dive into Disappointment and Delight

Ah, Netflix, the place where dreams come true—until it doesn’t, right? While many of us cling to the hope of a binge-worthy evening, the streaming giant has unveiled three new series recently. But let’s face it, folks: it’s a bit like buying a surprise gift, only to unwrap a pair of socks. So, let’s embark on this journey through Netflix’s latest foray into the unknown, shall we?

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

Ever heard the phrase, “If you can’t do, teach”? Well, Netflix has taken that to heart with its latest animated effort. With the Tomb Raider franchise having more ups and downs than a joyful pogo stick enthusiast, expectations were sky-high–or maybe it was just the altitude from the last franchise disaster!

We’ve got a series that’s supposed to bring life to legendary tomb raider Lara Croft, but alas, it seems they forgot the “legend” part somewhere in production. Critics are still trying to decipher what happened—was it the animation studios trying to channel Picasso or were they simply told, “less is more”? Apparently, “less” won out, leading us to what some have described as a viewing experience far less thrilling than watching paint dry on an actual tomb.

The Secret of the River

Next, we dive into The Secret of the River. Spoiler alert: the secret really isn’t that much of a secret! It’s like that relative who insists on telling you the ending of movies before you’ve even had your popcorn. Here, we’ve got two students, a summer in Mexico, and a grandmother teaching Zapotec. It sounds beautiful, doesn’t it? Sweeping landscapes and heartfelt moments, like a postcard that should never have been sent because no one needs to see that level of cuteness.

But, with charm and authenticity in the air, you can’t help but be drawn into their world. This series might just be the cozy blanket you snuggle under when you remember your last Netflix binge left you with nothing but anxiety and questionable life choices.

Deception

Lastly, let’s jet-set over to the Amalfi Coast with Deception. Ah, the Amalfi Coast—the perfect setting for sun-soaked deception and more drama than a soap opera without the budget. Our protagonist, Gabriella, manages a luxurious hotel while indulging in a glimpse of the fairer sex with fewer clothes than your average beach day. The audacity! It’s like a scene straight out of a summer romance novel—albeit one penned by a teenager after too many energy drinks.

If you’re into plot twists and seduction sprinkled with tension, this one might just be the guilty pleasure you’ve been craving. Just remember to keep an eye on your drink—suspicious characters abound!
