An alarm has been raised in Chania after at least 43 cases of gastroenteritis were registered from Monday afternoon (10/14/24) to Tuesday morning (10/15/24) in the Emergency Department of the city hospital.
The measures that have been taken are similar to those of the pandemic, that is, the use of a mask is mandatory inside the hospital while there will be a strict restriction on visits.
According to Creta24 and statements by the Director of the Chania Hospital George Bea, the gastroenteritis virus is extremely contagious. “What the chairman of the Infections Committee suggested and the Administration responded immediately is that to protect our patients due to the hypertransmission of the gastroenteritis virus since the first three samples clearly show that it is a norovirus that causes viral gastroenteritis. So in order to protect our patients and staff we will go to pandemic measures, i.e. mandatory masks in the coming days throughout the hospital and a strict restriction of visitors, by decision of the treating doctor and the head of the Clinic”, noted Mr. Beas.
Most cases of gastroenteritis were between the ages of 18-23, from various areas of the prefecture of Chania.
“Yesterday from 19:30 we had an influx of cases with symptoms of gastroenteritis in the Emergency Department. By 12pm the number of incidents had reached 11 and by 8am it had risen to 43 incidents. 27 of these incidents were between the ages of 18-23 while the rest were of various age groups. According to the data, they were from various areas wider than the municipality and other municipalities of the prefecture of Chania”, said Mr. Beas.
As the Commander of the Chania Hospital stated, no one is being treated at the hospital at this time, while some people remained in the hospital for a short time in order to rehydrate.
