Glyoxylic acid, a potentially toxic cosmetic ingredient
Glyoxylic acid is a chemical substance used in certain cosmetic products for its qualities as a smoothing agent. As part of the national cosmetovigilance system piloted by ANSES, four cases of acute renal failure, linked to the use of different hair straightening products containing glyoxylic acid, were analyzed. The poisoned people recovered following treatment.
As soon as the first case was analyzed, ANSES took action in order to carry out an inventory of knowledge on the renal toxicity of glyoxylic acid when applied to the hair. The expertise undertaken by the Agency aims to document a proposal for changes to European regulatory provisions in order to appropriately regulate the use of this substance, which is not currently restricted in cosmetic products.
Pending the conclusions of this expertise, the General Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Repression (DGCCRF) and the General Directorate for Health (DGS) call for vigilance regarding the use of straightening products. containing glyoxylic acid, given the associated risk, and recommend against their use.
What are the signs of kidney failure and what should you do?
