India: 30 deaths including 16 children in government hospital in two days

The report said that the deceased patients were suffering from snake bite, stomach, kidney and heart diseases. According to reports, four of the children’s illness was at an incurable level.

Opposition Congress Party chief Mallikarjan Kharge wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in Hindi: ‘These patients have died due to lack of medicine and treatment. A similar incident took place in August 2023 in a government hospital in Thane district, in which 18 patients died.

Indian National Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote: ‘The news of the death of 24 people, including 12 newborns, due to lack of medicine in a government hospital in Nanded district of Maharashtra is very sad.’

On the other hand, a hospital official tried to downplay the seriousness of the situation by alleging that most of the patients were brought in from neighboring districts in a critical condition.

Superintendent SR Vakude said: ‘We are the only care hospital in the district and we often receive critical patients.’

SR Vakude denied that the hospital was short of staff or medicines.

According to NDTV, the hospital claimed that essential medicines are available in the institution and that it has sufficient funding. The hospital added: ‘Other patients are being treated as needed.’

Dilip Mahesika, director of medical education and research in Maharashtra, said a three-member committee has been formed to probe the incident, which will submit a report at 1 pm (local time) on Wednesday.

After opposition parties criticized the state government over the state of public health facilities, state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the deaths were ‘unfortunate’. He promised a thorough investigation into the incident.

Rahul Gandhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi Targeting the ruling party, it accused: ‘The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) government spends crores of rupees on its publicity, but there is no money for medicine for children.’

Earlier in August this year too, 18 patients had died in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kilwa of Thane district in 24 hours.
