The president of the High Authority for Communication (HAC), Germain Ngoyo Moussavou, in his speech opening Wednesday October 16, 2024 in Mouila, provincial capital of Ngounié (south of the country), held a seminar dedicated to strengthening the capacities of journalists , challenged these spearheads of society on the imperative need to highlight their responsibility characterized by ethics and deontology in the processing and dissemination of information, to persevere, he said, peace during the transition process to Gabon started on August 30, 2023, the date of the military coup also called “liberation coup” which saw the arrival in power of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
“For the continuation of the transitional process, it (press) is called upon to inform the populations in a responsible and objective manner, keeping in mind that it is in a certain way guarantor of social peace, living together and of national cohesion »launched Mr. Ngoyo Moussavou.
Thirty (30) journalists handpicked from public and private media will participate for three days in this workshop organized by the HAC in collaboration with the Gabonese Council for Freedom of Communication (CGLC) and the financial and technical support of the UNOCA, UNESCO as well as the CNUDHD.
With the main theme: “the consolidation of press freedom in the context of the Gabonese Transition”, the seminar will have to provide tools to communicators called to always question themselves to avoid spreading false information or hateful messages which could exacerbate conflicts in this context of democratic fragility.
For Norbert Ouendji, head of the UNOCA Strategic Communication and Public Information Unit, “Journalists have a responsibility to inform. They must do this rigorously, verifying their sources, disseminating balanced and objective information, and avoiding becoming relays of propaganda or rumors. They must facilitate the establishment of a constructive dialogue between the different political and social forces in the country, thus making it possible to create a healthy and peaceful public space for the confrontation of ideas.”
