Canada and India expel each other’s diplomats – World

India has faced yet another setback at the global level. Canada expels Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma. Along with them, five more diplomats have also been ordered to leave the country. Canadian authorities say that they have found solid evidence of a conspiracy to kill pro-Khalsan Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nagar. Canada informed India about the new evidence last week.

Earlier it was reported that the Indian government has recalled its high commissioner and other senior diplomats from Canada. The Canadian government said yesterday that Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, stationed in Canada, had been declared a person of interest by investigators during the investigation into the murder of Hardeep Singh Nagar. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reacted strongly to this and termed it as a political tactic of the vote bank.

In September 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that India was involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nagar. There was a lot of noise in India on this too and the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it reserves the right to take measures in this regard.

There has been tension between India and Canada for more than a year over the murder of Hardeep Singh Nagar. Hardeep Singh Najar was an ardent supporter of Khalistan. He was assassinated on 18 June 2023 in front of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Newton, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

Hardeep Singh Nagar was found dead in his car. The Canadian authorities arrested four people from Indian Punjab in connection with the investigation of this murder.

The Indian government has been vehemently denying the allegation of involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nagar and in this regard both the countries have taken steps like summoning some diplomats.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs says that it has requested many times, but the Canadian government has not even once shared the evidence regarding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nagar. The matter has been limited to accusations only.

Relations between New Delhi and Ottawa were further strained last year when Canada accused India of involvement in the assassination of Canadian pro-Khalistan Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannu. An Indian citizen was also arrested. Gurpatwant Singh also holds US citizenship and was planned to kill him in the US.

Canada recalled more than 40 embassies from India in October 2023. The move came after New Delhi asked Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in India.

In June, a committee of Canadian parliamentarians named India and China as the major external threats to their democratic institutions. India’s High Commissioner in Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, has called the allegations against him baseless and political in the investigation of the Najar murder case. He says that the allegations have been made under the influence of pro-Khalistan Sikhs.
