Public sector workers protest in Caracas

  • Protesters demand that their rights be respected, such as access to a living wage

Public sector workers gather on Wednesday, October 16, in front of the headquarters of the Ministries of Labor and Health, in Caracas, to demand a better quality of life and respect for their rights.

“For a bone, for a bone only my salary is enough!” is one of the slogans of the protesters.

People also shout slogans asking for job benefits and the payment of outstanding debts and a decent bonus. The workers urge the Venezuelan State to offer a response to their requests.

People also shout slogans asking for job benefits and payment of outstanding debts. The protesters allege that the first payment corresponding to the bonuses were 4 dollars to the exchange rate in bolivars, which is why they consider it insufficient to cover their basic needs.

“We are collecting the same amount (bonuses) as last year. Previously, workers received this payment according to the basic basket index. Nowadays, with what we receive, we cannot buy anything. The government preaches about equality, but what we workers suffer is inequality,” said Carlos Julio Rivera, representative of the Association of Social Security Retirees and Pensioners.

The workers urged the Venezuelan State to offer a response to their requests. Union leader Mauro Zambrano rejected the intimidation of public sector employees who demand their labor rights. “We have to protest and here we are. We are not going to rest until we achieve the objective,” said Zambrano.

Active and retired employees of various public administration unions attended the demonstration and stated that they will not stop protesting until their requests are heard.

Representatives of the public sector alleged that they have received between 5 and 15 dollars in bonuses from the Venezuelan State.

According to testimonials from users on social networks, it would be the third consecutive year in which this amount does not exceed $20 in the first payment.

Split payment

In Venezuela, the deposit of bonuses in the public sector is carried out in installments, so the other two months of remaining bonuses will be paid between October 25 and November 12, in accordance with what was done in previous years.

A user identified as Yuhendrik Zamora, who identifies himself as a university professor, assured that he spent his bonuses on three products.

“I went to the supermarket and bought three products and the month of bonuses was over,” he said in a message published in X on October 12.

On October 4, union leader Mauro Zambrano assured that the income of Venezuelan workers is precarious and insufficient to cover the needs of families regarding the Christmas and New Year festivities.

“It is not possible to have a happy Christmas with a bonus of dollars a month and the family scattered around the world,” Zambrano said in a press conference.

The union leader urged the Venezuelan authorities to dignify workers’ salaries and their social benefits.
