This Monday, the European Union (EU) ignored the result of the Russian elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine. According to the organization, Moscow must understand that the process was void in these areas.
Jose Maria BorrellHigh Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security, explained that the organization “does not recognize and will never recognize either the holding of the so-called ‘elections’ in the territories of Ukraine or their results”.
“They are void and cannot produce any legal effect,” he added.
Borrell explained that those who participated in said processes will have to face the consequences of legal actions.
The EU also denounced that the elections took place in a restricted environment and without real opposition: “Russian authorities have continued to increase systematic internal repression by taking action against opposition politicians, civil society organizations, independent media and other critical voices through the use of repressive legislation and politically motivated prison sentences.”Borrell said.
Likewise, the diplomat indicated that Agreements are expected to be reached to apply sanctions against Moscow for the death last February of the Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalnya figure about whom there are questions after his death in a high security prison.
