The first color Kindle from Amazon: books and comics like never before – SMARTmania.cz

  • Amazon introduced a new generation of Kindle readers
  • The main novelty is the Colorsoft model with a color e-ink display
  • The Scribe, Paperwhite and basic Kindle models have also been rejuvenated

Today is a holiday for all modern book readers, because Amazon has unveiled a new generation of its Kindle electronic readers. We saw four new models, the highest of which comes with a pleasant technological treat – a color e-ink display. It is not without interest that the new readers were introduced by Panos Panay, the former head of Microsoft’s computer division.

Kindle Colorsoft: the first Kindle with a color display

Amazon’s first color book reader looks at first glance like the existing Paperwhite model. The main difference appears after activating the display, because it can display not only 16 shades of gray, but also color content. Amazon did not brag about how many colors the reader can display, but one can read interesting information in the specifications – when viewing monochrome content, the screen has a fineness of 300 ppi, with color “only” 150 ppi. Thanks to the font optimization technology, the font should not look sloppy even in color mode.

The screen has a 7″ diagonal and has a special oxide layer ensuring high contrast. Thanks to this, the image does not look like on a tablet, but like in a colored newspaper. Evening readers will be pleased with the option to illuminate the screen.

The Kindle Colorsoft also received a new processor, which is supposed to speed up page turning by up to 25 percent. The reader has a capacity of 32 GB, so it can fit a lot of books and long comics. It goes without saying that it is water-resistant and long-lasting, which should ensure up to 8 weeks of reading. The icing on the cake is the presence of wireless charging.

Kindle Scribe with artificial intelligence

The Kindle Scribe notebook with a 10.2″ display has also received an upgrade. It looks the same as the previous generation, but thanks to artificial intelligence, its capabilities are significantly broader. The device can summarize the content of long texts, convert handwritten notes into machine-readable text, etc. The new Active Canvas function will greatly simplify writing annotations and comments in books. Amazon also introduced a new stylus for this reader with a better construction and a softer rubber tip. The reader will be available in three memory variants – with 16, 32 or 64GB of storage.

Kindle Paperwhite got a bigger display and a faster processor

The updated Kindle Paperwhite has improved in several areas, basically it can be said that it is a Colorsoft model with a monochrome display. The popular reader got a larger 7″ screen, a faster processor and also an extended battery life. 16GB of storage will be used for storing books.

Although this is the thinnest model in Amazon’s offer, it should provide up to 3 months of battery life on a single charge. The choice of colors will also please you – the Paperwhite will be available in black, green and red as a base, the Signature edition in metallic colors and double the storage will also go on sale.

Kindle: brighter display and low price

The latest news is the basic Kindle reader, which according to Amazon is the lightest and most compact reader in the portfolio. The device retains a 6″ screen with a fineness of 300 ppi, but the brightness of the illumination has increased by a quarter between generations. Compared to the Paperwhite model, however, it is not possible to change the light temperature. Kindle has Bluetooth connectivity, so it is possible to connect headphones or a speaker to the reader and listen to audiobooks.

The Kindle will also be available in a Kids Edition version, to which Amazon adds a colorful case and a six-month subscription to Amazon Kids+.

Prices and availability

Kindle Colorsoft will go on sale on October 30, the price for the 32GB variant is set at 295 euros (about 7,500 crowns including VAT) on the German Amazon.

Kindle Scribe will go on sale on December 4 at the following prices:

By Jakub Karásek

The New Kindles: A Book Lover’s Dream or Just a Colorful Nightmare?

Well, well, well! It’s a holiday for bookworms everywhere, as Amazon has decided that our reading lives needed a serious upgrade. Forget the plain old grayscale – they’ve rolled out the red carpet for the Kindle Colorsoft, the first Kindle with a color e-ink display. It’s like someone finally painted the Mona Lisa with a splash of neon! But let’s dive into the joys and quirks of the new lineup, shall we?

Meet the Kindle Colorsoft: Going Full Colour!

Now, what’s the catch with this dazzling Colorsoft, you ask? At first glance, it looks just like the Paperwhite, but once it’s switched on, you’ll realize it’s not just another grayscale wannabe. It displays 16 shades of gray and – wait for it – color content! Amazon’s being a bit coy with the exact number of colors, but when you can view monochrome content at 300 ppi and color at a “mere” 150 ppi, you know you’re stepping into a new realm of reading experience. And if you squint hard enough, it might just look like your favorite comic strip!

Kindle Scribe: Your New AI Assistant!

Next up, we have the Kindle Scribe, now upgraded with artificial intelligence, because obviously, what we really needed was for our Kindle to think for us! Summarizing long texts? Check! Converting our terrible handwriting into something legible? Double-check! It’s almost like having a helpful friend who never steals your snacks. Plus, the new Active Canvas feature means writing annotations will be easier than getting a cat to ignore you while you’re trying to work!

Kindle Paperwhite: A Driving Force of Light!

The Kindle Paperwhite is also donning a new coat, with a bigger display and a processor that can outrun its predecessors. This thinner model promises 3 months of battery life on a single charge, which is fantastic because who really wants to remember to charge their e-reader? Available in some exciting colors like black, green, and red, you’ll finally have a Kindle that matches your outfit… or at least your sense of style.

The Basic Kindle: Keeping It Real!

Then there’s the basic Kindle, which holds the title of the lightest model in Amazon’s collection. With a 6” display and a brightness increase of 25% from the last generation, it’s perfect for reading comfortably in bed without waking your partner – unless you drop it, of course. And for those who enjoy audiobooks, the Bluetooth connectivity is a lovely addition. Talk about versatility overused!

Prices, Availability, and Final Thoughts

Alright, now to the bit that really matters – the prices! The Colorsoft hits the shelves on October 30 for a cool €295, while the Scribe starts from €407 in early December. The Paperwhite is available now for €173, which may just make it the most wallet-friendly option unless you’re buying for the whole family… then it might be like leaving a tip for a meal!

In conclusion, are these new Kindles game-changers or just gimmicky toys? Only time will tell, but they surely show Amazon isn’t just resting on their literary laurels. Whether you’re a hardcore reader or someone who just enjoys swiping through a few pages, it seems there’s a Kindle for every kind of reader. Just remember: with great technology comes great responsibility to actually use it!

Happy reading!
