The governor of Florida (United States), Ron DeSantis, reported that city authorities arrested the owner of the dog that was found abandoned and tied to a fence on the west coast of the state, before the passage of Hurricane Milton.
The arrested person was identified as Giovanny Aldama García, 23 years old, and will face charges of aggravated animal cruelty, which could carry a sentence of up to five years in prison for a “third-degree serious crime.”
“You can’t tie up a dog and leave it out there during a storm. It is totally unacceptable and we are going to hold him accountable,” DeSantis told the media on October 15.
According to the Florida Prosecutor’s Office, García told police that he had abandoned his dog, named Jumbo, when he fled to Georgia because “he couldn’t find anyone to pick him up.”
Jumbo’s Rescue
Jumbo’s rescue went viral through social media, when agents from the Florida Highway Patrol found him tied in a flooded area in Tampa, when they were carrying out mandatory evacuations in the area before the arrival of Hurricane Milton on September 9. October.
The incident caused outrage among Internet users and local authorities, who condemned the act and called it animal cruelty.
“I hope they find the person who did this. We have very good laws in Florida against animal cruelty,” said Governor DeSantis after learning of the event.
According to local media, authorities took the animal for a veterinary check-up to evaluate its health and it was given a new name, Trooper.
Hurricane Milton and its effects
Hurricane Milton made landfall on the night of October 9 in Siesta Key, near the city of Sarasota (Florida), with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour, that is, category 3.
On October 13, Florida authorities reported that the hurricane caused the death of at least 23 people, several of them from tornadoes that originated before the cyclone made landfall.
