According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), in 2023, 900,000 people in France were treated for this type of cancer and 60,000 new cases were diagnosed. The Inca recalls that 80% of breast cancers occur after the age of 50. It is from this age that it is therefore recommended to carry out screening every two years.
How to get tested?
From the age of 50, women receive an invitation letter to be screened for free. Screening consists of a clinical breast exam and a mammogram. In some cases, an ultrasound is also necessary. Please note that you should not hesitate to consult as soon as an abnormality is felt.
From the age of 25, a clinical examination which includes observations and palpation of the breasts is recommended at least once a year. It can be carried out by a general practitioner, a gynecologist or a midwife.
According to Public Health France, the participation rate in screening is decreasing. Between 2022 and 2023, 46.5% of women aged 50 to 74 had a mammogram compared to 47.6% between 2021 and 2022.
Between 2022 and 2023, the highest participation rates were observed in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Normandy and Brittany and the lowest in Guyana, Corsica and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women. On the occasion of Pink October, it is important to remember the seriousness of this disease and to raise awareness among women of the importance of screening.
