Vienna/Prague (PK) – On his last trip abroad as President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka met Markéta Pekarová Adamová, Chairwoman of the House of Representatives of the Czech Republic, in Prague this afternoon. The bilateral discussion focused primarily on domestic political developments in both countries, the current foreign policy situation in Ukraine and the Middle East as well as the challenges for democracies, particularly due to social media, the increasing polarization of society and the rise in anti-Semitism. At the subsequent reception in the Austrian embassy, Sobotka presented his Czech counterpart with the Great Golden Medal of Honor with the star for services to the Republic of Austria.
Sobotka praises special efforts to deepen bilateral relations
The awarding of the decoration recognizes Markéta Pekarová Adamová’s special commitment to strengthening bilateral, parliamentary relations with Austria and representing common concerns in the EU and in multilateral bodies, emphasized Sobotka. This is particularly important in times of multiple crises that endanger the European security architecture and democratic principles and values.
Pekarová Adamová also tried very hard to express “the unity of Europe” and thus the strength of the Union in the face of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, Sobotka continued. At the parliamentary level, the organization of the second parliamentary summit of the International Crimea Platform in October 2023 and the EU Parliament Presidents’ Conference in April 2023 in Prague should be highlighted. President Pekarová Adamová has always been particularly concerned about future issues such as the importance of representative democracy in the age of social media and the expansion of renewable forms of energy.
