They also briefed each other on their talks with regional leaders, “emphasizing the importance of working to ensure stability in the region.”

“They expressed their shared concern about the risk of escalation in the wider region, particularly in the West Bank,” the statement said.

In addition, R. Sunaks and E. Macron “agreed that it is important not to lose sight of the long-term future of the region and, above all, the need to find a two-state solution.”

UK and French leaders stressed that Hamas does not represent ordinary Palestinians and that its barbarism should not undermine the legitimate aspirations of the enclave’s residents, according to a Downing Street spokesman.

The French president’s office said that during the conversation, E. Macron and R. Sunak also reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself under international law.
