Lebanon’s Prime Minister: The US has promised a de-escalation of Beirut attacks

– Through our dialogue with the US authorities last week, we received a kind of guarantee for a reduction in attacks against Beirut and the southern suburbs, says Mikati in a statement.

He does not go into details about these promises, but says that the US is “serious” when it comes to putting pressure on Israel.

Later on Wednesday, the US Foreign Ministry confirms that it has raised the Beirut attacks with the Israeli government.

– There are some targets that are appropriate for Israel to attack. But when it comes to such attacks as we have seen in Beirut in recent weeks, we have clearly told Israel that it is something we are concerned about and something we are against, says spokesman Matt Miller in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

US worried about death toll

The Lebanese capital has been the target of a number of Israeli attacks since Israel stepped up its war against the Lebanese militia in late September, and the US was particularly concerned about the high death toll.

In several attacks in the days following the escalation, several hundred people were killed in Beirut. Thousands of people were also injured.

A total of 1,356 people have been killed in Lebanon since September 23, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health.

Israeli media have recently written that the US has put pressure on Israel to stop the attacks in Beirut, which Israeli officials have rejected.

However, there have been no new attacks against Beirut since last week.

Lebanon wants a ceasefire

In an interview with the Arab TV channel Al Jazeera Mikati says his government wants to establish a ceasefire and elect a president in the country, a role that has been vacant since 2022.

He will also implement Resolution 1701 from the UN Security Council. The resolution from 2006 calls on Israel and Hezbollah to end the armed conflict between them.
