In the ongoing effort of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food to support Greek producers and to deal with the consequences of the climate crisis, the responsible minister, Kostas Tsiaras, referred to the parliament, while pointing out his opposition to the installation of photovoltaic parks on productive land.
Mr. Tsiaras said: “The fact that there is reduced production due to the high temperatures, the fact that plant capital or even livestock has been destroyed due to these intense weather phenomena, the fact that all this has the interest of developing even more diseases and in plants or in a production process that to a very large extent we had never recorded in the past, you realize that all of these constitute a different landscape. And on this we are asked to make decisions”, and he added that a draft law for the ELGA is being drafted, with provisions aimed at supporting the primary sector.
At the same time, he underlined that the political will to support the agricultural sector, to strengthen it and to have an important role in the maintenance of social cohesion, is stable.
All the opposition parties emphatically referred to the issue of OPEKEPE, asked to put a brake on the plans for the installation of photovoltaic parks in areas of high productivity and underlined the need to have measures of substantial support for the primary sector, which is faced not only with the results of the following politics but also with the climate crisis.
“I have told you my opinion. I cannot accept solar parks being developed on productive land. What happened with the existing legislation is known, in the sense that there was a legislative framework which may have changed at one time and of course generally provided for the percentage of photovoltaics that could be developed in the territory.
Regarding the current situation and regarding the competence of the Ministry of Rural Development, I want to assure you that this is a position of mine, which is not going to be overcome, because you know very well that everything I say or whatever what concerns the land available from the Ministry of Rural Development, obviously it is the responsibility of the minister and the Ministry of Rural Development”, answered Mr. Tsiaras.
Regarding the OPEKEPE issue, the Minister of Rural Development and Food reiterated that the Organization must clean itself up and take steps in the next day. “That is why I have decided to put him under surveillance by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
Because we simply have to monitor the consolidation plan, the action plan, which must be implemented by OPEKEPE next year, and this must be done step by step, obviously with the responsibility of the Ministry of Rural Development”, said Mr. Tsiaras.
