Motorist is shaken after dramatic experience on the road

– The man tried to brake, but he hit at least two of the animals. There is extensive damage to the car, which subsequently ended up in the ditch, says warden Karsten Højrup from North Jutland Police.

– The male driver is unharmed, but he is of course very shaken.

Immediately after the accident on Centralgårdsvej north of Aabybro, another driver came driving.

– It is so fortunate that he is a Swiss dog handler, so right now they are searching for the red deer that have been hit in the area, Karsten Højrup tells Nordjuyske on Wednesday morning.

Aalborg tops the list of collisions

The message came at 6:53 a.m. on the day when Dyrenes Beskytselse sent out a press release that it is now the season for collisions. There are especially many in October and November.

A calculation from the association shows that Aalborg Municipality tops the list with 272 collisions in the first nine months of 2024. Other examples are Frederikshavn Municipality with 175, while in Hjørring there have been 168.

The animals can weigh up to 150 kilos, depending on the species, and therefore things can go really wrong in the event of a collision.

The Protection of Animals also mentions a number of considerations that can be made.

– In autumn, the big challenge is that the days are getting shorter and shorter. This means that we transport ourselves to and from work at dusk and dawn, which coincides with the times of the day when the deer are most active. And that results in an increased number of collisions, says biologist Michael Carlsen at Animal Protection in the press release.

– Therefore, our recommendation is that you take your foot off the accelerator when driving along green areas, be on the lookout for glowing eyes on the side of the road and note when signs warn of an increased risk of deer in the area.

He also emphasizes that deer are herd animals, so a deer rarely crosses the road alone.

In total, Dyrenes Beskyttelse has moved out 7529 times for a deer collision in the first nine months of 2024.
