The energy crisis in Ecuador worsens

Energy crisis in Ecuador! authorities of Ecuador They warned this Monday about the worsening of the crisis regarding energy. In that sense, the Minister of Energy and Mines in charge, Inés Manzano, described the situation as critical.

The Government committed to incorporating a maximum of 1,431 additional megawatts until April 2025. According to data from the National Energy Control Center (Cenace), the electricity deficit, which is currently 1,680 megawatts, will be greater in 2025, due to the increase in demand. of 500 megawatts each year.

Likewise, the electrical engineer and professor at the National Polytechnic School (EPN), Gabriel Salazar, predicted that it will be difficult to eliminate blackouts in the last quarter of 2024, especially due to the critical water situation of the Mazar and Paute reservoirs.

«The Government’s objective is to avoid blackouts by December, but it will be extremely difficult. Most likely, it will only be possible to reduce interruptions from 10 hours to two,” Salazar declared.

Ecuador suffers a 30 percent deficit in its electrical capacity. On average, the country consumes 90 gigawatts per hour, but it lacks 27 to meet total demand. To reduce the impact, the ideal would be to increase the production of thermal energy, even if it is polluting, until the water levels in the hydroelectric plants stabilize.

“We know that it will not rain in December, and possibly not in the first weeks of January 2025. We have nothing left but to depend on thermal energy, that is, fuel generators,” emphasized Gabriel Salazar.

The Government does not state that it has not carried out proper maintenance on the hydroelectric plants throughout the nation.
