Until now, we were aware of the various INCA, ENNS and ESTEBAN studies analyzing the links between food, the environment and the health of the population. Since September 16, a new health survey of the French population has been launched by Anses and Santé Publique France. Titled ALBANE, it aims to continuously assess the health of the French populationits exposure to chemical substances and to better understand their links with food and the environment. Zoom in on the contours of this unprecedented and ambitious investigation.

ALBANE: a new survey on the health of the French

In the family of studies analyzing the health of the French population, we have known three until now:

The ANSES INCA study (national individual study of food consumption). The ENNS study (National Health Nutrition Study) by Public Health France. The ESTEBAN study (Study on the environment, biomonitoring, physical activity and nutrition) from Public Health France.

A new global health survey will now take over. Entitled ALBANE (for Food, biomonitoring, health, nutrition and environment), it is an unprecedented national survey which pursues several objectives including:

Evaluate the state of health of the French population. Evaluate your eating habits, physical activity and sedentary lifestyle. Evaluate your exposure to chemical substances.

Carried out jointly by Anses and Santé Publique France, this new study started on September 16 in two regions: Ile-de-France and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It will then be deployed nationally from May 2025.

A first pilot phase

During the first phase of the survey and for three months, 200 adults aged 18 to 79 and 200 children over 2 years old from the two pilot regions will be recruited by means of a random draw from an INSEE database.

To know! It will also be possible to include children under 2 years old living with participating adults.

For the purposes of this first phase of the investigation, participants will have to answer various questionnaires, carry out a health examination as well as biological samples. The objective is to better understand:

Eating habits and the level of physical activity of the population. The presence in the body of environmental chemical substances (pesticides, bisphenols, plasticizers, perfluorinated compounds, etc.).

After collecting and analyzing these initial results, public authorities will be able to develop measures aimed at improving the health of populations. As for the researchers, they will be able to test the survey protocol in real conditions and make adjustments if necessary before its national deployment planned for May 2025.

ALBANE: a continuous and lasting investigation

Once deployed on a national scale, the ALBANE survey is expected to last over time. It will in fact be repeated in two-year cycles. For each cycle, the panels studied will include more than 3,000 people aged 0 to 79 and will be representative of the French population. The evolution of the state of health of the French population will thus be monitored by comparison from one cycle to another, as will the achievement of the objectives set within the framework of public health policies.

Based on a system of unprecedented scale, the ALBANE survey aims to become a continuous tool for observing the state of health of the French population. There is no doubt that it will constitute a valuable aid to better prevent and manage the appearance of chronic diseases within the population and that it will make it possible to establish interesting comparisons with the health situations of countries deploying the same type of surveys such as Germany, Canada or the United States.
