The Weight of Learning: Are We Carrying Too Much?

Abu Dhabi is stepping up to tackle the enormous weight on students’ shoulders—literally! New guidelines dictate that school bags should weigh no more than 5-10% of a child’s body weight. Who knew that backpacks could become the next fitness craze?

According to the American Chiropractic Association, the max weight limits depend on grades. You wouldn’t want to be that poor kid lugging around a bag that looks more like it’s meant for a weekend hiking trip than a day of learning!

  • KG1/FS2: 2 kg
  • KG2/Year-1: 2 kg
  • Grade-1/Year-2: 2 kg
  • Grade-2/Year-3: 3-4.5 kg
  • Grade-3/Year-4: 3-4.5 kg
  • Grade-4/Year-5: 3-4.5 kg
  • Grade-5/Year-6: 6-8 kg
  • Grade-6/Year-7: 6-8 kg
  • Grade-7/Year-8: 6-8 kg
  • Grade-8/Year-9: 6-8 kg
  • Grade-9/Year-10: 10 kg
  • Grade-10/Year-11: 10 kg
  • Grade-11/Year-12: 10 kg

Why is this important, you ask? Besides the obvious—kids shouldn’t be hunching over like a question mark every time they stand up—the excessive weight can cause harm. We’re not just talking about academic burdens here; this is about preventing the kids from turning into human origami!

With the new law kicking in by February 2026, schools need to put their thinking caps on (hopefully not too heavy ones) and make sure that backpacks are as light as a feather and packed with knowledge rather than bricks.

Conclusion: Lightening the Load for Bright Futures

Ultimately, while it seems like an easy fix, this regulation could revolutionize the way our children learn. If schools follow through, kids might just walk into classrooms with ease, ready to soak up information like the sponges we know they are. And let’s face it, they might even have enough energy left over to socialize instead of pulling their backs out saying, “Can someone help me lift my bag?”

So here’s to a future where education is carried on the shoulders of knowledge— not on the backs of kids!

Abu Dhabi – Abu Dhabi limits the weight of private school students’ bags. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (Adec) has issued strict instructions that schools should ensure that the weight of the school bag does not exceed 5 to 10 percent of the child’s body weight.

The American Chiropractic Association recommends the maximum weight of a student’s school bag in each grade. The new law will come into force in February 2026.

It is advised to avoid causing negative effects on children’s spine or whole body by carrying excessive weight. It was also reminded that the health and physical conditions of the students and other health problems should be taken into account while determining the weight of the school portion.
